But now for worse news. We went yesterday afternoon to see Leta in Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where she was taken a week ago. She had gone to see her doctor a week ago Wed. and driving home she suffered a weakening of her left hand, arm and leg which can only be described as a stroke. How she managed to make it home alone is a wonder. Then a cough she had developed and pressure on a lung required further examination and she was taken to the Ford Hospital. They had not yet completed all their biopsy diagnosis when we had to leave yesterday afternoon, but she had been told she may have a cancerous tumour on one lung, and while we were there the doctor said they would begin radium treatment (radiology?) tomorrow morning with the thought of shrinking the growth. As I say, a definite diagnosis has not yet been given her, but her situation does look grave - for the long term at least. She could move her arm at the elbow by yesterday but has no use of the fingers. Whether the two troubles are related I cannot say. We shall of course hope and pray for the best, and if, as we presume, she remains in hospital for some time, we shall go over to Detroit again. Fortunstely her family do not live too far away and one or other has managed to see her daily. Arla was there yesterday afternoon, and Charlene will be taking her turn. Leta's mind is unaffected, though of course her emotional anxiety shows through.
