Note 2 - by Robert

Douglas Elementary School was a big old brick building, with a fenced in playground which was having a hard time remembering that it was paved with asphalt, somewhere under the dirt. The bricks probably would have been pale yellow if they had not been so grimy. I don't recall if there was an official school song, but I remember the kids sang, to the tune of "London Brigde", "Douglas School is falling down, falling down, falling down...".

I remember the first warm day in the spring of 1950 when Mother insisted that we wear short pants to school, as we had always done on warm school days in Canada. We told her that no one else would be wearing short pants, but despite our tearful protests, she insisted that we try it for at least one day. It wasn't as bad as I had feared. Only one student commented on my short pants, and he just asked "Did your mother make you wear those". All I had to say was "yes".
