Dear Robert

Your letter was received today. We have been following the events in Mississippi as they appear in our Minneapolis newspapers.

Your original notes and letters to Jim arrived O.K. and both have been turned over to him. You certainly have immediately got yourself some memorable experiences whether good or bad I don't know. We are sorry you had your stuff stolen.

Douglas and family were here Sunday the 13th & Monday the 14th. We first learned of your being in jail Monday evening when Miss Cooper of the Freedom Democratic Party telephoned here collect {saying that 500 people had been jailed & you were among them} and tried to get us to send $100 bail money. We suspected that you had not authorized it and we refused to send the money. We told her that you had planned to arrange your own bail if you needed it. Jim thought it was a scheme to get money out of northern people. If you knew nothing about this perhaps this is another reason for taking another sober look at the FDP.

The telephone call came while Douglas was still here so they heard about your plight immediately too. {It was not a pleasant evening for us.} I suppose you will have to appear in court some time. Hope it will not obligate you to go back there after you are back in Madison.

...Hope this letter reaches you. Let us know when you have a new address.
