Winter Eclipse
White on white, the Samoyed pads on the snow in front of me,
My trailing footprints each forming with a satisfying crunch.
The night is crisp and clear, with the moon lighting our way.
But, unheeded by the dog,
An inky tide has begun to steal its way across the shining circle above.
At each sniff stop, I linger to gaze up at it again.

We are almost ready to turn homeward when suddenly,
My companion halts, one front paw raised, and peers.
Several houses ahead, a dark mass, two people wide,
Sits motionless on the roof of a small white car.

We approach with caution, her eyes intent on the anomaly.
Circling behind, she stops to stare again, much closer now.
Finally, "What is the meaning of this!" she demands to know,
With a single sharp bark.

"Hi", the huddled mass responds.
"It's ok" my laugh assures her, and we crunch on past.
"Sometimes the moon makes humans do strange things."
I only think the explanation to myself,
As her attention follows her nose into another snowbank,
And mine turns skyward again.
